Though infrequently seen, the Northern Saw-Whet Owl often visits
the higher altitude Spruce-Fir Forest in The Black Mountains. In The Blacks
and The Smokies the Saw-Whet is pushing the edge of it's Southern range.

The feisty Garter Snake inhabits much of the East Coast from Florida into
Canada. These snakes are prone to strike and emit a musky stink when disturbed.

Turkey Vultures, are the most common birds of prey seen in The Blacks.
Often spiraling on mountain generated thermals, their side to side rocking
and V-shaped wings distinguish them other Raptors at a distance.
