Mt. Mitchell State Park To Replace Tower With New Observation Deck
The modernistic tower on the top of Mt. Mitchell is on its way out. The tower built in 1959 has been a symbol of Mt. Mitchell for close to 50 years but the harsh environment and lack of handicapped accessibility have doomed it for renovation. The newer structure will be an observation platform accessible by way of a ramp. The trail from the parking lot to the summit is being rerouted and will be paved to aid in easier access to the summit. For many people this new trail will offer the first chance to be atop the highest peak (6684') in Eastern North America.
